While the Danish submarine HDMS KRONBORG entered the harbor, six Sailors
manned the forward and aft topside sections. They were prepared for this
Sunday morning’s most important task, to moor the submarine pier side to
disembark the crew. While family members waited anxiously on the pier for
the arrival of their loved ones, their enthusiasm exploded with shouts and
waves when they saw the submarine enter the harbor.
As the submarine maneuvered toward its mooring station in front of the
Sweden ship HSwMS BELOS, the six crewmembers tossed their mooring lines
ashore. With a quick underhand pitch, the mooring lines fell onto the pier
and were quickly secured. The submarine maneuvered bow first, positioning
itself diagonal to the pier. As the three forward crewmembers secured the
bow of the submarine alongside the pier, the aft crewmembers had to
maneuver the stern into position to moor the KRONGBORG. As two Sailors
feed the mooring line through the aft section of the submarine, the
remaining Sailor heaved in the line pulling the stern alongside the pier.
As family members crowd around the pier, the KRONGBORG Sailors manned
topside as the brow was put into place so the crew could disembark. Once
the brow was in place, the children ran toward their family members to
welcome them home. Once the crew was on the pier, they quickly fell into
ranks to receive a few welcome home gifts and were then dismissed for the
day.
The submarine returned from a two-day underway period, traveling from
Sweden back to Denmark.
The KRONBORG was originally owned by Sweden, who sold the submarine to
Denmark last year. The submarine has a crew of 27 Sailors.
SORBET ROYAL is the fifth NATO sponsored live Submarine Search and
Rescue Exercise. The exercise is conducted every three to four years and
takes place from May 21 – 31.
